Marion Turowski is the director of Somerset Counseling Center PC, in Troy Michigan. Her counseling center has been located in Troy since 1991. Marion is licensed for independent practice by the state of Michigan as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). As well, she is certified as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) by the National Board of Certified Counselors, Greensboro, North Carolina.

In addition to individual and group counseling, Marion speaks to groups and conducts workshops on mental health issues. She has presented at the national, state, and local levels.

THE LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR-

The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) is the professional organization that represents the mental health counseling profession. Mental health counselors practice in a variety of settings, including independent practice, community agencies, managed behavioral health care organizations, integrated delivery systems, hospitals, employee assistance programs and substance abuse treatment centers. Mental health counselors are uniquely qualified to meet the challenges of providing flexible, consumer-oriented therapy and high quality care. They combine traditional psychotherapy with a practical problem solving approach that creates a dynamic and efficient path for change and problem resolution.

The Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) provides counseling services involving the application of the principles of psychotherapy, human development, learning theory, group dynamics and the etiology of mental illness and dysfunctional behavior. The purpose is to treat psychopathology and promote optimal mental health. LPC's have been recognized for delivering clinical services in private and public settings throughout the state and country. In 1988 the Licensed Professional Counselor Statute was enacted by the state of Michigan based on the standards of the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. (CACREP). An LPC must have a minimum of a Master's Degree in Counseling, 3,000 hours of supervised post-masters experience, and successful completion of the National Counselors Exam (NCE) administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). After attainment of the Master's degree but before the other standards are satisfied, a counselor holds a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC) credential (for not less than two years) and practices under the supervision of a full LPC.
